On one of our first trips together, we went to the Children's Museum in Indianapolis, Indiana. We were pretty amazed at all the exhibits (especially the Barbie tribute!) but our favorite was the dinosaurs. As a memento of the trip, and because dinosaurs are so awesome, we bought velociraptors for each other and named them Fred-Rupert and Rosie. They reside on each of our desks at work, keeping bad computer viruses at bay, and have since been joined by Tony T-Rex, Alex Allosaurus, and Tracy Triceratops.
We are both pretty avid runners, though we do go through bouts of laziness. We have run many 5K, 10K, and half marathon races together, and participated in the Bataan Memorial Death March this past March, held at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. 26.2 miles of trudging (or running, if you're Josh) up and down and around mountain and through desert sand. We plan on doing it again...sometime.
We both received Bachelor of Science degrees from Purdue University, Josh in Computer Science and Karla in Mechanical Engineering. As such, we have become intimate with several coding languages and scripting tools, and feel super cool and nerdy whenever we are coding something up for class (or for fun!). The snippet on the home page is from one of Josh's codes.
As both of us are computer-oriented people, one of our favorite past-times is reading XKCD, a webcomic heavily influenced by math, physics, and computers. The comic on the home page can be found here.
Engines are cool, especially ones like the exploded engine sculpture at the Cummins corporate headquarters in Columbus, Indiana. Karla interned with Cummins, Inc. and her graduate research included modeling and algorithm development (and experimentation) with a Cummins 6.7L diesel engine (the one commonly found in the Dodge Ram 2500 & 3500 trucks).
